By Kayode Adoide
France is facing a widening wave of protests as students, parents, teachers and trade unions take to the streets demanding improved funding and better conditions in the country’s education system.
More than 6,100 people have reportedly been arrested, with most of those detained said to be minors, as demonstrations spread across the country.
The protests began among high-school students over concerns including overcrowded classrooms, shortages of teachers and other staff, deteriorating school facilities and inadequate education funding.
Thousands marched across France on Tuesday, October 6, with parents, teachers and unions joining the student-led movement. While many demonstrations remained peaceful, clashes were reported in some cities, with police deploying tear gas.
The growing unrest has placed additional pressure on the French government to address the grievances and restore calm in schools across the country.
