Uganda has thrown its weight behind veteran diplomat Dr. Olara Otunnu in the race to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, as the contest to succeed António Guterres gathers momentum.
The Ugandan government formally nominated Otunnu in July 2026. The experienced diplomat previously served as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Foreign Minister, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.
Otunnu has stepped up his international campaign, meeting key diplomatic figures, including representatives of permanent members of the UN Security Council, as he seeks support for his candidacy.
During his campaign, he has emphasised reform of the United Nations, restoration of its moral authority and stronger international cooperation at a time of growing global conflict and division.
He is among eight candidates currently seeking to become the UN’s 10th Secretary-General when Guterres completes his second term on December 31, 2026.
The final choice will depend heavily on the 15-member UN Security Council, particularly its five permanent members — the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom — before the candidate is recommended to the General Assembly.
