VENO NEWS: OPINION:PRO AND CONS OF PROTESTS IN NIGERIA By Comrade Idowu Oladunni
Date: 03-08-24

The ongoing protests within the country are purposely designed to inform our government that the economic status of the country is not favourable and to as well let the government know that people are suffering.

It is to raise awareness, call the attention of our government to social, political, or economic issues, sparking public debate in order to proffer a lasting solution

To influence policy changes for a reason not far fetch from changes in laws, policies, or practices that are bringing hardship to Nigerians and as well as promoting justice and equality.

This will enable us to hold our leaders accountable for their actions and inactions and to hold the elected officials and institutions accountable for their actions and policies.

To remind them of their promises during the electioneering campaign and also ensure the dividends of democratic governance are enjoyed by the electorates who trooped out in numbers to vote during election

Despite all the benefits stated above, protests could be bad if not properly organised and monitored . intact, it could cause violence and inflict injuries on people when not properly managed, which could result in injuries, arrests, or even fatalities that we have seen in the ongoing protests

It could also resulted to Property damage, vandalism, or looting. What happened in Kano is a good example of this scenario.

Daily lives could be distrupted most especially public services, transportation, and business activities. It could also create divisions and reinforce existing social, political, or economic inequalities.

As we have seen in recent and previous protests, local businesses, tourism, and the economy were affected
Most Protests are without clear objectives or strategies.

This is one of the reasons why we fail to achieve meaningful change. If we must achieve meaningful change, we must educate the people that Protest is not all about vandalism and creating chaos within the country but to create awareness as it has been previously outlined.

This will prevent the extremist groups from hijacking the protests and undermining the original cause.

Protests are not as bad as media or government tagged it if proper managed and channel towards a purposeful course
