• Promotes environmental sustainability, education and job creation
Access Holdings Plc is making a significant impact on education, environmental sustainability and youth empowerment through its innovative circular-economy initiative, “A Sandal More.”
The initiative, implemented in partnership with FREEE Recycle, has provided more than 10,450 children in underserved communities with durable school sandals manufactured from discarded tyres.
According to the company, the programme has reached 50 schools, recycled approximately 8,000 waste tyres and trained 100 young people in shoemaking and entrepreneurship.
The project addresses three major challenges confronting communities: inadequate school footwear, environmental pollution and youth unemployment.
Each pair of sandals contains approximately 85 per cent recycled materials, demonstrating how environmental waste can be transformed into valuable products.
The programme began with the distribution of 2,200 pairs of sandals to pupils in 10 public schools in the Apata and Dugbe areas of Ibadan, Oyo State.
It has since expanded across the Ibadan metropolitan area, providing footwear to more children while creating economic opportunities for local artisans, waste collectors and young entrepreneurs.
Speaking on the initiative, Ayodeji Lawal, Head of Sustainability at Access Holdings Plc, described the programme as an investment that combines environmental responsibility with educational advancement and economic empowerment.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond distributing footwear by converting environmental waste into educational assets and economic opportunities.
Similarly, the Founder of FREEE Recycle, Ifedolapo Runsewe, disclosed that the partnership, which commenced in 2024, has transformed more than 8,000 discarded tyres into sandals benefiting children across several communities.
Beyond supporting education, the programme contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly quality education, decent work and economic growth, responsible consumption and production, and climate action.
Access Holdings reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the programme and measuring its long-term impact on education, environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative demonstrates that yesterday's waste can become today's opportunity and tomorrow's hope for thousands of children.
