VENO NEWS: HAPPY INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA@63 By Idowu Oladunni
Date: 02-10-23

It may sound otherwise, but it is nothing but the truth. 95.05% of our leaders are nothing but parasites. Long time ago, we have our tradition, culture and norms and value which is one of the process to check the excessive operation of a particular arm of government such as the Oyomesi in the old Oyo empire and the age grade in the Igbo community and something similar in Hausa-Fulani Kingdom.

Thanks to Anthony Enahoro, who partially liberated us from the almighty Britain. Truly, we had gained freedom from the Great Britain, yet still suffering in the hands of our selfish leaders. They are confused and corrupt.

Nigerian Independence Day is not worthy of celebration. And before you raise your glasses and toast to 63 years since we shook off our colonial predator, you may want to ask yourself: ‘is there much to celebrate?

Since the emergence of democracy in 1999, election was rigged openly in almost across the states under different administration just to spread their political tentacles. Nigeria, despite all propaganda and promises during the electioneering, we are yet to enjoy the dividends of democracy they promised.

When you toast to independence, you are toasting ignorance and a culture of impunity. Your celebration inadvertently implies that you are applauding a nation where, more recently, the failure superseded its success.

The Nigeria population has been let down when resources as basic as consistent electricity current remain a rarity. When average Nigerians can not afford to feed themselves. Pump price is something else since the removal of subsidy without necessary measures on ground to cushion the effects on the price of good and services.

Nigeria is a nation sitting in the shadow civilised by corrupt and self-serving political figures that pillage its resources like an all-you-can-eat buffet with a two-hour seating time.

I rather pray to my creator to liberate us from all the political parasites than making toasts, throwing parties and putting on gaudy cap , what this Independence Day should do is prompt critical thought about what 63 years of self-determination has produced.

In an article on the subject by acclaimed Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, he wrote: “If a people must survive, the reign of impunity must end.” This isn’t a critique on terrorism or on corruption; but a critique on ignorance.

Political figures control public resources and are in no genuine manner accountable. Under the fallacy of democracy, continued cultural conflicts have been allowed to divide a nation already historically fragile.

Nigeria is riddled with many inconvenient truths, often blanketed by the cloak of patriotism.

The inconvenient truths would identify the number of public figures who manoeuvre and manipulate political circles for personal gain, including investigation of those that have looted our fund.

I will typically celebrate mý Independence Day if the same old politicians who had spoilt this nation-state are force out of their respective positions. If we are toast to anything next year, then let’s celebrate ourselves.

Let’s celebrate the enduring nature of the Nigerians but let’s stop enabling those who are failing the nation with complicity behaviour and premature celebrations.

What we want next year is free and fair election that will enable the electorates to determine their fate through their statutory obligations, which votes and be voted for.

The next time I celebrate Nigerian independence, it will be when no single Nigeria’s youth is swimming in the pool of poverty.
