Twenty-five years after her untimely death, American singer and actress Aaliyah Dana Haughton, affectionately known as the “Princess of R&B” and “Baby Girl,” continues to be remembered as one of the most influential young stars of her generation.

Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, at the age of just 22, when a Cessna aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Marsh Harbour in the Bahamas. She had been in the country filming the music video for her song “Rock the Boat.” Aaliyah, seven members of her team and the pilot died in the crash.

Born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah began pursuing entertainment at an early age. By her teenage years, she was already making her mark in the music industry.
Her 1996 album, One in a Million, became a defining moment in her career. Working with producers and songwriters including Timbaland and Missy Elliott, Aaliyah helped develop a smooth, futuristic R&B sound that would influence artists for decades.

Songs such as “One in a Million,” “Are You That Somebody?,” “Try Again,” “More Than a Woman” and “Rock the Boat” remain fan favourites. Her self-titled third album, Aaliyah, was released only weeks before her death in 2001.
She was also establishing herself in Hollywood. Aaliyah appeared alongside Jet Li in Romeo Must Die and later played Queen Akasha in Queen of the Damned, which was released after her death.

Beyond music and acting, Aaliyah became a fashion and cultural icon. Her relaxed but distinctive combination of baggy trousers, crop tops, sunglasses and sleek hairstyles helped define a youthful look that continues to be recreated today.

Her influence has endured well beyond her lifetime. The Recording Academy notes that later generations of R&B performers have continued to cite, sample and draw inspiration from her music, vocal approach and fashion.

On August 25, 2026, fans and entertainment media around the world once again marked the anniversary of her passing — this time, a full quarter-century since the tragedy.

Aaliyah's career lasted only a few years, but her impact has lasted decades.

Twenty-five years on, the Princess of R&B is gone — but her music, style and legacy live on.
