Date: 21-08-26

By Kayode Adoide

The political temperature in Kano State is rising ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the controversy surrounding red caps and other political symbols becoming another talking point among rival camps.
Abdulmumin Jibrin has predicted that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) will lose Kano South, which he described as an important voting bloc in the state.

Speaking on the growing controversy over political symbols, Jibrin said some supporters associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement had allegedly dropped and burnt their red caps.

He, however, stressed that his own political camp had exercised restraint and had not retaliated by burning symbols belonging to its opponents.
“We are cautious. We didn't burn their symbol,” Jibrin said.

According to him, some APC supporters were angered by the development, prompting party leaders to move around and appeal for calm.
“Our supporters are very upset, and we are going around to calm them,” he said.

Jibrin nevertheless warned that continued attacks on APC symbols could provoke retaliation, saying his supporters should be allowed to campaign peacefully and mind their political business.

The development has brought renewed attention to the significance of the red cap, a symbol closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement in Kano, as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

As the contest for Kano gathers momentum, political leaders and their supporters will be expected to ensure that rivalry over party colours, caps and other symbols does not degenerate into violence.
