By Kayode Adoide
A lecturer at Maryam Abacha American International University, Kano, was allegedly beaten after he was caught in a situation linked to claims of sexual harassment involving a married female student.
According to reports, the lecturer allegedly pressured the student to engage in a sexual relationship and, after she repeatedly refused, reportedly continued to fail her in examinations over a period of about two years.
The situation reportedly came to a head when the student's husband, with the assistance of some friends, allegedly set a trap. The lecturer was reportedly caught while attempting to meet the woman, leading to a physical confrontation in which he was severely beaten.
The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations. If proven, the case raises serious concerns about abuse of authority, sexual harassment in higher institutions, and the need for stronger mechanisms to protect students.
As of the time of filing this report, the university had not publicly released an official statement on the incident, while authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
