A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a suit challenging the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), thereby affirming the party's current leadership under David Mark.
In its judgment, the court held that issues relating to the leadership and membership of a political party are internal affairs that are generally outside the court's jurisdiction. It ruled that the claimant failed to establish sufficient legal grounds for judicial intervention and had not exhausted the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.
The suit, filed by House of Representatives member Leke Abejide, sought to nullify the emergence of David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary of the ADC. The court dismissed all the reliefs sought, leaving the current leadership structure intact.
The judgment is expected to provide greater stability for the opposition coalition that has adopted the ADC as its political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. It removes a major legal uncertainty surrounding the party's leadership and is likely to strengthen the coalition's preparations for future electoral activities.
Political observers believe the ruling gives the coalition, which includes figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, a more stable platform to continue consultations, expand nationwide structures and prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
