A lady rescued from kidnappers in the Ogbere forest area of Ogun State has narrated her harrowing experience in captivity, revealing that she had already resigned herself to death and prayed for eternal rest before security operatives rescued her.
The victim, Temiloluwa, was among five travellers freed by the Ogun and Lagos State joint security outfit, Operation Kosaye, during a coordinated rescue mission carried out on Friday.
Temiloluwa described the operation as a miracle and praised the bravery of security personnel who risk their lives to protect citizens.
According to her, the ordeal began on Thursday, June 25, while she was travelling from Edo State to Lagos to spend her annual leave with family members.
An Information Technology officer with a private firm in Edo State, Temiloluwa said she was travelling with two senior colleagues when armed kidnappers ambushed their vehicle along the Ogbere axis in Ijebu East Local Government Area.
She recalled that gunshots rang out suddenly, throwing motorists into panic and causing several vehicles to collide as drivers attempted to flee.
Temiloluwa disclosed that while the driver managed to escape, one of her colleagues refused to abandon her after noticing she had sustained injuries.
The kidnappers reportedly dispossessed the victims of their valuables, including cash, jewellery and wristwatches, before forcing them to trek for about four hours into the forest.
While in captivity, the victims were instructed to contact their families as the abductors demanded a ransom of N20 million for their release.
Hope appeared lost until Friday evening when heavy gunfire erupted in the forest during a rescue operation by security personnel.
“We didn’t know what was happening. The kidnappers started running while we struggled to hide. One of us eventually gathered enough courage to look around and discovered it was the police. That was the last thing I ever expected,” she recounted.
Overcome with emotion, Temiloluwa admitted that she had already accepted her fate before help arrived.
“We have always believed the police were not doing enough, but when I came out of the bush and saw the officers in their numbers, I was speechless. I had already accepted that I would not survive. I had even prayed to God to grant me access to His kingdom if I died.
“Seeing the police come to rescue us completely changed my perception. Since bringing us out, they have treated us with care and dignity,” she said.
