The General Overseer of VENO Prayer Centre (Mountain of Covenant), Ayede via Ifo, Ogun State, Bishop Dr. Sanya Ojo SOMH Cares, has admonished Christians to guard their hearts diligently, warning that a guilty conscience is a dangerous spiritual condition that can separate a person from God.
Delivering a sermon during the Encounter With Jesus programme on Saturday, the cleric spoke on the theme, "Eri Okan Ti Ku" (A Guilty Conscience Is Dead). He explained that while many people concentrate on outward appearances, God is more concerned about the condition of the human heart.
Drawing from Genesis 6:5, Bishop Ojo noted that before God destroyed the earth with the flood, He first examined the hearts of mankind and found that every imagination of their thoughts was continually evil. According to him, this serves as a reminder that the heart is the battlefield where the struggle between God and Satan takes place.
"The heart is where God desires to dwell, but Satan is also seeking entrance. Whoever controls your heart controls your life," he declared.
Quoting Jeremiah 17:9, the Bishop described the human heart as naturally deceitful and desperately wicked, stressing that no one should rely solely on personal feelings or emotions. He identified pride, bitterness, envy, hatred, unforgiveness and secret sins as signs of a heart that is drifting away from God.
Bishop Ojo further warned that persistent rejection of God's truth could result in a hardened conscience. Referring to Romans 1:28, he explained that when people continually ignore God's voice, they may eventually lose the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.
"A dead conscience no longer fears God, no longer feels conviction and begins to celebrate evil instead of righteousness. That is one of the greatest spiritual dangers anyone can face," he cautioned.
The cleric, however, encouraged believers not to lose hope, pointing to Psalm 51:17, where King David sought God's mercy after his sin. He explained that God does not reject those who genuinely repent but welcomes every broken and contrite heart.
He urged worshippers to remain faithful in prayer, study the Word of God daily, confess their sins, forgive others, and maintain a close relationship with the Holy Spirit in order to keep their consciences alive and sensitive to God's voice.
Concluding the message, Bishop Ojo reminded the congregation that miracles, wealth and earthly success are meaningless without a right relationship with God.
"The greatest miracle is not the possession of riches but having a clean heart before God. Let your heart become God's dwelling place and never Satan's residence," he charged.
The service ended with fervent prayers for divine mercy, spiritual renewal and the cleansing of every hardened heart, as worshippers rededicated their lives to Christ and sought the grace to live with a pure conscience before God.
