The death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday has climbed to 589, with thousands more injured and many people still missing beneath the rubble.
The powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck within seconds of each other, causing widespread destruction across the country. The hardest-hit areas include La Guaira and parts of Caracas, where more than 100 buildings collapsed, trapping residents and leaving entire communities in ruins.
Emergency rescue operations are continuing around the clock as local volunteers, firefighters, military personnel, and international search-and-rescue teams race against time to locate survivors. Thousands of families have been displaced, while hospitals are struggling to cope with the large number of injured victims.
Several countries have dispatched rescue teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid to assist Venezuela in responding to one of the country's worst natural disasters in decades. Authorities have also declared the worst-affected regions disaster zones and appealed for continued international support as aftershocks continue to threaten rescue efforts.
The government has warned that the casualty figure may continue to rise as emergency workers search collapsed buildings and remote communities cut off by the disaster.
