This is certainly not the best of times for Nigeria. Barely 27 years after the return of democratic rule, and amid renewed efforts by the Federal Government to tackle insecurity, another tragic incident has shaken the nation.
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who was abducted by bandits.
According to the state government, the retired army officer died while being held captive by his abductors, despite efforts to secure his release.
The sad development has sparked fresh concerns over the worsening security situation across parts of the country and the continued menace of banditry, kidnapping, and violent crimes.
It would be recalled that during his campaign visits to Katsina State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pledged to eliminate banditry and restore security if elected into office. In his Democracy Day broadcast on June 12, the President again extended an opportunity for bandits and criminal elements to surrender and embrace peace or face the full force of the law.
However, the death of Major-General Abubakar in captivity has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians, many of whom are questioning the effectiveness of ongoing security measures and calling for more decisive actions against criminal groups terrorizing communities.
Security analysts have described the incident as a painful loss, noting that the deceased dedicated a significant part of his life to the service and defence of Nigeria.
As the nation mourns the late army general, many Nigerians are hoping that authorities will intensify efforts to rescue other victims still being held by kidnappers and bring the perpetrators to justice.
May his soul rest in peace.
