Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of next year’s general election.
Atiku was declared winner after defeating two other contestants in what party officials described as a peaceful, free, fair and transparent primary election. He was thereafter handed the party’s flag.
In his acceptance speech, Atiku expressed appreciation to members of the ADC for the confidence reposed in him, describing the mandate as a call to rescue Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, democracy remains alive in the ADC despite what he described as intimidation, oppression and anti-democratic actions by the ruling APC government.
He accused the APC-led administration of harassing opposition figures, weakening opposition parties and attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Atiku warned that any further attempt by the Presidency, INEC or the judiciary to interfere in the affairs of the ADC would be resisted.
He also congratulated his fellow contestants, Chief Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, urging them and other party members to close ranks for the task ahead.
The former Vice President said his government, if elected, would prioritise security, education, economy, healthcare and power-sharing among the constituent units of the country.
He promised decisive action against insecurity, free and compulsory education at primary and secondary levels, economic reforms, improved healthcare and accountable leadership.
Atiku declared that the ADC would offer Nigerians “renewed action” instead of what he called the “meaningless renewed hope” of the APC government.
He appealed to all aggrieved members to return to the party, saying there were no winners or losers in the primary election.
“I am ready to lead,” Atiku said, promising to campaign and govern with all stakeholders if Nigerians give ADC the mandate.
