Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has paid a solidarity visit to former Kaduna State Governor and ex-Minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, at his Abuja residence, following what he described as an “embarrassing” incident involving security operatives at the airport.
Reacting to the encounter, Atiku condemned the alleged attempt to arrest El-Rufai, describing it as an abuse of power and an affront to the rule of law.
“Despite what happened at the airport, it is good to see that you reunited peacefully with your family. What happened was totally unacceptable. This is a society governed by the rule of law,” Atiku said.
The former Vice President accused the ruling government of attempting to intimidate and embarrass political opponents, noting that such actions pose a serious threat to democracy.
“They tried to humiliate you, not minding your pedigree as a former minister and ex-governor. We must be vigilant to ensure that the judiciary is not used as a tool to undermine democracy,” he warned.
Atiku further alleged that opposition parties, including the PDP and ADC, were being targeted through judicial and security channels, assuring El-Rufai of continued solidarity.
Responding, El-Rufai expressed gratitude for Atiku’s visit and concern for his welfare.
“This is the second time Your Excellency has come to my house to commiserate with me.
Your concern for my personal welfare and that of your political associates will not be forgotten,” El-Rufai said.
Providing his account of the airport incident, El-Rufai stated that the operatives who accosted him failed to present any formal invitation or warrant.
“Agencies have rules of engagement. When I was accosted at the airport, I requested a letter. I was informed that ICPC procured DSS to arrest me and hand me over to them. ICPC has not contacted me officially. Only EFCC wrote to me, and my lawyer has already responded to their invitation,” he explained.
El-Rufai described the incident as unnecessary and avoidable, placing responsibility for the embarrassment on the anti-corruption agency involved.
He, however, vowed to remain resolute in the political struggle ahead, declaring:
“I will not sleep until the battle is won in 2027.”
